No such thing as an HD antenna, so yes, unless your TV is digital.

There is no such thing as an “HD” or “digital” antenna, that’s just marketing hype. Any TV antenna will work equally as well for analog as for digital.

The need for the box depends on the TV. If you have an older analog style TV, then you need a converter box. If you have a newer TV with a built in ATSC digital tuner, then you do not need the box, because everything is built in to the TV. You do need a good antenna though.

If you have cable or satellite, none of this applies to you. Your cable or satellite company will take care of everything.

No sort of antenna will negate the need of a convertor box, if you need one anyways.

So called “HD” or “Digital” antennas are made or optimized for the frequencies that digital TV will end up using. They will otherwise output the same signal as an older antenna will.
You will still need to tune the digital signal somehow; with a convertor box, recorder with digital tuner, or a TV with a digital tuner.

    Short and simple.

    1. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “HDTV/DIGITAL ANTENNA” don’t waste your money. Regular rca rabbit ear antennas work the same as other ones.

However, the ones that are “amplified” can boost the signal reception rate if regular rabbit ear antennas are not working well.

    Bottom line is,

THERE IS NO HDTV antenna, but AMPLIFIED antennas can be helpful.
