is there a difference between a regular antenna and an hdtv antenna?

Posted on 27. Jan, 2010 by admin in Antennas

I dont have cable. I use a converter box and im thinking of buying this ‘hdtv’ antenna to replace my regular old antenna. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5000836

My question is does an hdtv antenna pick up the same channels as a regular antenna? Is there a difference?

Terk Technology HDTVi VHF/UHF HDTV Indoor Antenna

$19.99

The age of digital TV is here. It’s no longer a dream of the future. With it, over time, more TV stations will be broadcasting HDTV signals. If you want excellent over-the-air television reception, this TERK HD-TVi Indoor HDTV Antenna is the accessory you need now.TERK HD-TVi — The acknowledged leader in antenna technology has just introduced their first-ever Indoor HDTV Antenna. The high performance HDTVi is the only indoor antenna that receives both UHF and VHF signals (channels 2 – 69), providing reception of all local HDTV broadcasts. With over 1,000 stations in more than 200 markets broadcasting digital television as of 2003, 9 out of 10 households can now receive free high-definition (HDTV) signals when using the right antenna in conjunction with an integrated HDTV (or with a set-top box and an HD-ready television). Most antennas are large and unwieldy and need to be mounted outdoors or in a cramped attic. This is not an option if you live in an apartment or condo, or if you don’t want the hassle of installing an antenna yourself. The solution? A quality indoor antenna that can pick up all local HDTV channels; one that will look great next to your television, and one that is easy to install: Terk’s HDTVi indoor antenna. At the time of its release, the HDTVi was (and may yet be) the only indoor HDTV antenna optimized for both UHF and VHF reception, channels 2 to 69. The HDTVi elegantly solves the aesthetic challenge of integrating a log-periodic-type element assembly in an indoor antenna. It’s tuned for optimum HDTV reception with a unique design that uses log-periodic elements and dipoles for receiving both UHF and VHF HDTV broadcasts, bringing you more stations than lesser antennas. You can easily route the antenna’s output cable in 2 directions (front or back) for flexible cable management, and the antenna connects easily to your set-top box or television (integrated HDTV–with built-in ATSC tuner–required for direct connection). Its high gain picks up distant stations and its high back-to-front ratio rejects unwanted signals. You can mount the UHF antenna element vertically or horizontally, as experience dictates. Antennas Direct DB8 Multidirectional HDTV Antenna

$60.39

Intended for people at great distances from the transmitters, the DB8 is our most powerful multi-directional HD antenna. In fact, its 15.8 dB gain make it one of the most powerful multi-directional antennas available. The bow tie design of the DB8 uses triangular elements instead of rods to greatly increase the bandwidth allowing it to cover the entire UHF band. Additionally, the mesh reflector of the bowtie is more efficient than a rod reflector, is lower in weight, and provides less wind resistance for greater performance and durability. This DB8 is the ideal antenna for use in locations that can pull long range signals from various directions and offers an attractive alternative to using a directional antenna mounted on a rotator.

    No difference at all.

DTV is more demanding of a good signal than was the old analog standard so it does in some marginal signal cases require that you have a better antenna system.

they are going to stop most broadcasting of television stations ” thru the air” which is how most tvs pick up the stations. They will only be sending the stations dh .. if the converter box is the one that will pick up dh channels then you can use your regular antenna

    They are all the same.

An antenna, any antenna, cares about frequency (channel) not what’s on the frequency. So, a TV antenna will work just as well for analog, or digital, or FM radio (FM radio is sandwiched between TV channels 6 and 7).

Any claims to being “HD”, “Digital”, or “Color” are all marketing hype. Another myth is that all DTV stations are UHF. This is also incorrect, you need a VHF/UHF antenna.

You are asking a question that was the hardest for me to understand when I went through US Navy electronics school, antennas. Antennas are tuned to the frequencies they are going to receive. The old VHF antennas were tuned to the frequencies of the analog broadcast.
All TV is going digital. What the box you have is to convert the digital signal to analog for your old TV.
I will admit I do not know a lot about HDTV. It is
a digital signal, probably using the sidebands of the base frequency. You will need a new antenna for HDTV.
You cannot get HDTV if your TV does not support it so you can probably get by with your old antenna.
If you want HDTV you will need the new antenna and a new TV.
