how do i use and over-the-air hdtv antenna to work on my hdtv?

i have a hdtv, but cannot afford sattelite service.. also cox or mediacom are not available in my area.. can i use a over-the-air antenna to receive local channels in hdtv or just receive channels period and what are some recommended antennas to use.. thank you.

Ok…lets see…. do you live in an apt or house?
Apt: then you can get a set top antenna probably at RadioShack, a good one that might do the job would be about 50 bux…. if you have an attic in your apt then you can get a rooftop antenna and put it in there and point it towards you loca tv stations for best reception.
If you live in a house, then I suggest a rooftop antenna that you can put on the roof or in your attic. go to the shack and get one called the vu90 or if you live far from tv stations get the vu190. <– that one is about 17 feet long. but will pick up everything. including FM… I know I have one.
The next thing is always satellite TV. If you don’t have a lot of trees in the way, then I suggest satellite. You can get HD channels too.
